Fans who bought tickets to the Phillies' three-game series against the Red Sox probably figured at least one of the games would feature Jonathan Papelbon trying to shut the door against his former team. A hit, Bobby Valentine ejection and game-ending strikeout later, Papelbon had closed out Philadelphia's 6-4 win at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco has had a magnet for foul balls on his left knee lately. He fouled off another one in Wednesday's 9-2 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, which forced him from the game in the seventh inning. The Phillies said he has a bruised left knee.

The Phillies on Wednesday recalled left-hander Joe Savery to replace Vance Worley on the 25-man roster. That gives the bullpen four left-handers (Antonio Bastardo, Jake Diekman, Raul Valdes and Savery) and three right-handers (Jonathan Papelbon, Chad Qualls and Jose Contreras).

Elbow inflammation forces Worley to DL Thursday, 17 May 2012, 12:38 am
The Phillies are hoping for the best with right-hander Vance Worley. They placed him on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with inflammation in his right elbow. Worley had an ultrasound Monday and an MRI on Wednesday, which revealed inflammation in the posterior joint.
