by Eddie Mayrose

Ten years ago, the professional sports world took a sabbatical after the attacks on the World Trade Center. While it was absolutely the respectful thing to do, I remember how badly I wanted some kind of sporting event to take my mind off of the tragedy. Today, the NFL carries out that mission, providing us the entertainment we may need to deal with such a sad, sad day.

Two months ago, we weren’t even sure this day would come; as the lockout was in full swing. Any prep work or Fantasy mock drafts seemed a little hollow, as the uncertainty of the season stole a little of the fun. But, luckily, both parties succumbed to their greed and decided to amicably split the billions that we, the fans, provide. So, on with the show!!!

Stars- They’re a prize package this weekend, as QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson face the Under-Manninged Colts. Houston is primed for a worst to first divisional run, starting today; especially if Arian Foster can’t go…RB Knowshon Moreno is a Wagstaff favorite, poised for a big 2011. He’ll show the Raiders exactly why in today’s opener.

Stiffs- Don’t expect Baltimore to be overly impressed with the disco ball trophy Steelers’ WR Hines Ward won on Dancing with the Stars. He struggles mightily against the Ravens, a trend that will continue today… Cowboys’ WR Miles Austin is nursing a hammy; not the best condition for a stay on Revis Island… RB Reggie Bush will have to carry the load for the Dolphins, something he proved unsuited for in New Orleans- with a much better team around him.

Sleepers- We’ve been talking up Roy Helu for weeks now, so it’s time to put our monety where our mouth s. Look for the Redskins’ rookie RB to have a very strong game against the injury riddled Giants’ D… We love how WR Greg Little is positioned in Cleveland. Coming off a terrific pre season, he’ll be a favorite target of Colt McKoy.

Slippers- When the Not Farrugia League Draft came around to the fifth round, it was just too illogical for me to pass on WR Reggie Wayne. But the reason he lasted so long will be front and center today as Kerry Collins steps in for the injured Peyton Manning… If you thoought you had a steal when you grabbed Miami rookie RB Daniel Thomas, think again. Not only will he be splitting time with Reggie Bush, but a hamstring that has him listed as questionable prompted the Dolphins to sign Larry Johnson, further crowding the Miami backfield.

Is Michael Vick Really Best in Show?
by Eddie Mayrose

A year ago, Michael Vick was an afterthought in most drafts; a late flyer probably selected as no more than a handcuff to Kevin Kolb. After Kolb went down, however, Vick was the surprise of the season, vaulting his status from also-ran to, in some cases, the first pick in some mock drafts.

He hasn’t completely convinced the FantasySportsDirt staff, however, that he’ll return the dividends necessary to justify a first round pick. First, there’s the issue of Vick’s durability. While his running game is precisely why he is at the top of the QB list, it also puts him just one big hit away from the injury list.

Then, there’s the Eagles’ status as the NFL’s dream team for 2011. If Philly is going to make it to the Super Bowl, it’ll be on the legs of LeSean McCoy and Ronnie Brown, not Vick.

Finally, there are just too many QB’s that’ll provide more than adequate production in later rounds to pass on a stud RB or WR to select Vick. Actually, his success in 2010 supports the argument against him. Be patient at the QB position rather than rech for a high risk/reward guy like Vick.

Stars

OK, we all know Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers are at the top of everyone’s list. (Rivers is the FantasySportsDirt favorite.) So, who’s the guy that’ll produce on this level that you might be able to get a little later? Look no further than Matt Ryan in Atlanta. Having added WR Julio Jones to a potent offense that already included Roddy White and Michael Turner, Ryan will finish the season as one of the game’s elite, having grabbed himself a Super Bowl ring along the way.

Stiffs

Somehow, I expect the football gods to strike me down as I write this, but I have no choice but to list Peyton Manning as a stiff heading into the season. However, having missed all of the preseason while recovering from neck surgery and another procedure rumored to be pending, there’s no way you can take a chance on the future Hall of Famer.

Sleepers

Josh Freeman took a huge leap in 2010, tossing 25 TD and just 6 INT while rushing for 364 YDS. He did this win a relatively conservative offensive system, one the good professor believes will be expanded to suit his growing talent. We also love the potential of two former number one picks, Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford.

Slippers

Yeah, I’ve also seen those mock drafts that have Michael Vick going number one. Have to say I agree that the talent is there to justify such a lofty selection. On the other hand, I’m not convinced that the small-framed Vick can enjoy a healthy season unless Andy Reid dials back the offense to protect him. He’ll still be a star at the position, but probably won’t produce at a first-round level.

Put Your Season in the Right Hands

by Eddie Mayrose

They are the foundation of most Fantasy Football rosters. The stud running backs of the NFL, posting 100 yard games and lugging the pigskin over the goal line enough to make their owners kings of their Fantasy leagues. The problem is, with so much invested, your season is doomed if your prime ball carrier disappoints.

Such was the case last year with Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville’s star back who had registered 27 TD’s over the previous two campaigns. In 2011, however, despite the fact that his rushing total was, essentially, flat, his TD total plummeted to a measly 5. Given the fact that he was likely selected in the top five of most drafts, it’s hard to believe that Jones-Drew was a member of too many Fantasy champs.

In addition to securing a marquee back, sleepers become equally important as they allow a Fantasy owner the luxury of filling other holes with better players. Owners that passed on Ray Rice last year in favor of a WR like Calvin Johnson or Roddy White were rewarded well by Ahmad Bradshaw, whose numbers compared very well to Rice.

Let’s take a look at the studs you need to have, the sleepers that will help and the busts you need to avoid.

Stars- The emergence of Sam Bradford as the Rams’ signal caller has us clicking our heels over Steven Jackson. Always a top pick, he’s posted great numbers in the past as the only weapon in St. Louis. Now, however, with talented receivers to compliment the young QB, Jackson is set for a career year. Much the same can be said for Michael Turner in Atlanta, as rookie sensation Julio Jones becomes the final piece to one of the league’s most potent attacks.

Stiffs- Don’t buy into the hype surrounding the chances that Miami’s Daniel Thomas will emerge as a reliable sleeper. The Dolphins are going to be really bad, Reggie Bush is the starter and Thomas’ pre-season struggles will certainly continue into the regular season. Indy’s Joseph Addai hasn’t played a full season in five years. Donald Brown is having a great camp and Peyton Manning’s health is still in doubt. If Manning’s performance suffers, Addai’s will go into the tank.

Sleepers- Given his track record with unknown ball carriers in Denver, gotta love Mike Shanahan’s ability to elevate a running back. That’s why we’re so high on Roy Helu. The rookie from Nebraska has had quite a camp, even topping ther century mark in the ‘Skins second pre-season game. Grab him late and just wait for him to be given the job. When Ronnie Brown signed with the Eagles, there wasn’t much hoopla. However, we think that, in Andy Reid’s offense, he’ll have a very productive season in the red zone.

Slippers- As crazy as it seems, we’ve got to put Houston’s Arian Foster and the Titans’ Chris Johnson on this list. While both are likely to turn in stellar seasons, their individual situations are cause for immense concern. In Foster’s case, a hamstring issue could linger throughout the entire season. With Johnson, it could be a double whammy. Despite his holdout, he’ll still cost you a top pick. Then, when he returns, he’ll be a significant injury risk; having missed all of training camp. These guys could both turn out to be steals at the bottom of the first round, but are too uncertain at the top of the draft.

Professor Wagstaff’s Top 20 Running Backs

1 Adrian Peterson
2 Michael Turner
3 Steven Jackson
4 Jamaal Charles
5 Arian Foster
6 Rashard Mendenhall
7 Ray Rice
8 Knowshon Moreno
9 Chris Johnson
10 Maurice Jones-Drew
11 LeSean McCoy
12 LeGarrette Blount
13 Matt Forte
14 Ahmad Bradshaw
15 Ryan Grant

NFL Lockout Sets Rookies Back

by Eddie Mayrose

The story is always the same. Whenever there is discord within a family, the children bear the burden of the animosity. Such is the case heading into the 2011 NFL season, as the dispute between the owners and players as to how to split billions of dollars resulted in months of lost time for the rookies drafted into the league in April.

Even under the best of circumstances, most rookies are behind the eight ball as they struggle with a new playbook and the increased speed and talent while trying to carve out some measure of playing time for themselves. This year, however, that task became even more daunting for first year players as the league’s labor dispute erased all of their pre-camp preparation and forced them to acclimate themselves on the fly.

Traditionally, the freshman class is an area where Fantasy Football owners look to uncover a hidden gem or two in the late rounds. By the time they arrive at their draft tables, they have, at least, some idea about a rookie’s potential playing time and how he fits in to his team’s offensive scheme based on his pre-season performance. Not so, this season, as owners selecting a rookie must do so with their fingers crossed.

Make no mistake, there are a few diamonds in the rough available. They’ll just be harder to find. Here’s an idea of how the old professor sees things.

Quarterback
Boom- One thing to remember when selecting a rookie signal caller is that an opportunity for extended playing time usually comes with a bad supporting cast. In Cincinnati, however, Andy Dalton, poised to take advantage of Carson Palmer’s retirement, we’ll at least have another stud on the field in WR A.J. Green. Dalton has been a gunslinger throughout his college career, something that will suit him well as the Bengals should spend most of the season on the short end of the scoreboard. Grit your teeth and put up with the INT’s until Dalton and Green start to click.

Bust- The big name under center is, obviously, Cam Newton. The draft’s top pick and reigning Heisman winner, Newton comes to the Panthers carrying the burden of savior. While Carolina had some reservations about the selection, his athleticism and size were, ultimately, too much to resist. Fantasy Owners should resist, though, as this scouting report reminds us too much of JeMarcus Russell’s when Oakland handed him the keys to the kingdom. Newton’s college career was too short for him to be in a position to make any significant Fantasy impact this year.

Running Back
Boom- Daniel Thomas ran for more than 2,800 yards over the last two seasons while also amssing 30 rushing TD’s as the Wildcats’ lone offensive threat. He’s likely to share a large part of the load for the Dolphins, even with Reggie Bush coming aboard. Thomas won’t shy away from being “the man” in Miami, making him a very nice sleeper.

Bust- We’re not entirely comfortable labeling Saints’ rookie Mark Ingram a bust, especially given his Heisman pedigree. But, he’ll be splitting time with Pierre Thomas, New Orleans is a pass-first team and he’s just not that fast. We don’t see Ingram emerging as the starter at any point this season.

Wide Receiver
Boom- The easiest call on the board, as A.J. Green was the best player in the draft. Combine that with the fact that he’s already Cincinnati’s go-to guy and he’ll probably cost you a fourth or fifth round pick.

Bust- Don’t get sucked into the hype surrounding Torrey Smith in Baltimore. He’s a tremendous talent and should be a solid pro but we can’t ignore the fact that Joe Flacco still has a long way to go before he’s listed among the game’s elite. Until he does, the Professor will take a dim view of any Raven wideout.

Professor Wagstaff’s Top Ten Fantasy Rookies

1. A.J. Green WR CIN
2. Daniel Thomas RB MIA
3. Julio Jones WR ATL
4. Andy Dalton QB CIN
5. Roy Helu RB WAS
6. Ryan Williams RB ARI
7. Randall Cobb WR GB
8. Jon Baldwin WR KC
9. Titus Young WR DET
10.Colin Kaepernick QB SF

by Eddie Mayrose

After ten weeks, the good professor and his general manager, son Timothy, have outlasted ten family members and positioned themselves in the final four of the McGee Survivor League. Riding the tails of the Johnson brothers, their two superstar wide receivers Andre and Calvin, Waggie and Tim have seen their Fantasy Football team, Home Alone 2, dodge every bullet thrown its way. Now, with two brothers and a cousin standing as the only obstacles between him and the grand prize, Tim is feeling his oats. ” I talked dad out of Carson Palmer last week and Joe Flacco came through. This week, it’s Michael Crabtree in for Mike Williams. If we win again, dad’s paying for the Harry Potter movie.” We’ll see, Tim.

Fantasy Football Studs

- Worried that Chargers’ QB Philip Rivers might not be able to maintain his first half pace? Forget it, as San Diego’s MVP candidate gets his staring receiving corps back for a matchup with Denver. In Carolina, they’re down to third string RB Mike Goodson, who turned in a terrific game last week. Expect more of the same as the Panthers’ turn to rookie QB Tony Pike. Can’t imagine there’ll be a lot of passes in that game plan.

Fantasy Football Sleepers

- As mentioned above, Chargers WR Legedu Naanee returns from a hamstring injury to face the very generous Broncos‘ secondary. With Tyler Thigpen stepping into the starting role in Miami, look for TE Anthony Fasano to be a primary target in the Dolphins’ limited offensive scheme.

Fantasy Football Slippers

-We’ll see how Texans WR Andre Johnson does on Revis Island this Sunday vs. the Jets, especially with an ailing Matt Schaub. Detroit’s Calvin Johnson didn’t fare too well in the same scenario two weeks ago. San Diego’s Antonio Gates, already dealing with an injury, may see his numbers drop with the return of WRs Naanee and Malcolm Floyd to the lineup.

Fantasy Football Stiffs

- Don’t bet on Vikings’ WR Sidney Rice being in uniform this Sunday as he continues his recovery from hip surgery. Even if he does, he’ll struggle right along wit the rest of the Vikings. Give up the ghost on Arizona’s RB Beanie Wells. His “breakout” season has been a bust and should continue along the same path; especially if he can’t hang on to the ball.

Unless you're desperate for a WR, I'd pass on Randy Moss. A change of address isn't enough to cure what ails him... He's nursing a sore shoulder and his 105 yard outburst last week included a 69 yard run...RB Chris Ivory is still the Saints' only option in the backfield and enjoyed a solid game in his first go-round with the Panthers...Raiders' WR Louis Murphy is out for week 9 (chest)...An ankle injury won't be enough to slow Texans' WR Andre Johnson this week...Have to worry about all three Dallas WR, Miles Austin, Roy Williams and Dez Bryant with Jon Kitna under center.

Wagstaff Advances After Close Call in Survivor League

by Eddie Mayrose

As the second half of the season began for the McGee Survivor League, things looked bleak for our favorite Fantasy Football prof as he and son Tim headed into action without the services of New York Giants‘ RB Ahmad Bradshaw; sitting out his bye week. As feared, the less than impressive tandem of Chris Ivory and Javon Ringer returned less than 5 points. However, in an affirmation of Wagstaff’s theory that wide receivers should be your first round targets in a Fantasy Football Draft, the brothers Johnson, Calvin and Andre, totaled 56 points to carry the day. Now, with just six teams left and all byes behind them, Waggie and Tim have set their sights on last year’s champ, Dr. Pete, in hopes that the league may be theirs.

Unless you’re desperate for a WR, I’d pass on Randy Moss. A change of address isn’t enough to cure what ails him… While the solid play of the Detroit Lions’ defense has coincided with the offensive struggles of the New York Jets, this may be a big week for LaDainian Tomlinson as the Jets always play well on the road… Don’t fall in love with Pats’ RB Darrius Heyward-Bey. He’s nursing a sore shoulder and his 105 yard outburst last week included a 69 yard run…RB Chris Ivory is still the Saints’ only option in the backfield and enjoyed a solid game in his first go-round with the Panthers…Raiders’ WR Louis Murphy is out for week 9 (chest)…An ankle injury won’t be enough to slow Texans’ WR Andre Johnson this week…Have to worry about all three Dallas WR, Miles Austin, Roy Williams and Dez Bryant with Jon Kitna under center.

Fantasy Football Studs

With Jon Kitna trying to acclimate himself to his new role, he’ll rely on the short stuff; making Jason Witten a must-play… Randy Moss won’t be a total loss for the Titans this week, as his presence should open things up for RB Chris Johnson.

Fantasy Football Slippers

Braylon Edwards hasn’t been the focus of the Jets’ offense in a few weeks and has probably worsened his situation by grumbling about it in the media… DeAngelo Williams returns to a struggling Panthers’ offense that couldn’t free up Jonathan Stewart for more than 30 yards last week. Don’t expect much more from Williams.

Fantasy Football Stiffs

Ryan Matthews may be at full strength this week but he’s underperformed all year and doesn’t figure to produce like a lead back… Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck is recovering from a concussion and facing the Giants this week. Not a productive combination.

Running Backs? What Running Backs?

by Eddie Mayrose

Waggie and his partner, son Timothy, survived another week in the McGee Survivor League, actually turning in the highest total for the week, despite the gaping hole in their backfield that has been a problem all season. Even their mainstay, Ahmad Bradshaw of the Giants, has been a problem. Even though he’s been piling up yardage, Brandon Jacobs gets all of the touches inside the 10 yard line. Things are looking up, however, as the Professor and son woke up early on Tuesday and managed to beat the sleepy heads in their league to Chris Ivory of the Saints. Fresh off a 150 yard game and likely to get most of the work with Pierre Thomas out, he’s a great acquisition for a team facing the joint bye weeks of Andre and Calvin Johnson. It’ll be touch and go this weekend for Home Alone 2 but, if they survive, things are looking up the rest of the way.

Fantasy Football Studs

Love Philip Rivers this week in his matchup with the Patriots. For that matter, Tom Brady deserves a stud ranking also as this game should be a shootout. Rivers should feast on the Pats’ soft pass defense while Brady seems much more comfortable with Deion Branch than he did with Randy Moss.

Fantasy Football Stiffs

Bench Brett Favre as the Vikings head into Green Bay on Monday. He’ll try to do too much against his old team and will likely throw a few picks. In Miami, Ronnie Brown has failed to fire for most of the season and will find it even tougher sledding against the Steel Curtain.

Fantasy Football Sleepers

Raiders Tight End, Zach Miller should enjoy a big day in Denver, especially with Oakland’s limited options elsewhere. Seahawks’ WR Mike Williams looks to string two solid weeks together as the Cards and Seahawks, battle for NFC West supremacy in Seattle.

Fantasy Football Slippers

Chad Henne is in for as difficult a day as Ronnie Brown against Pittsburgh as the Miami offense will struggle against Pittsburgh. As long as the Bears’ O-Line continues on its mission to get QB Jay Cutler killed, each of the Bears’ receivers is a liability.

Wagstaff Still Alive in McGee Survivor League

by Eddie Mayrose

I know, I know. I’m the guy that loves the Fantasy Football wide receivers before the running backs in a Fantasy Football Draft so, as I’m hanging on by my fingernails in the McGee Survivor League because of a lack of production in the backfield. There has been very little help from Ahmad Bradshaw and Jerome Harrison and, too make matters worse, Andre Johnson has an ankle problem and will be a game time decision. Could be the end for Wagstaff’s Home Alone 2 squad.

RB Steven Jackson has a groin injury; his status won’t be determined until Sunday… Joseph Addai could be held out of Sunday’s contest because of a knee… A hamstring will likely keep Knowshon Moreno out of Sunday’s game with the Titans… Colts WR Austin Collie’s heel has healed enough for him to go on Sunday…Things are desperate in San Fran, and they’ll be using their version of the spread offense this week. Look for a big game from WR Michael Crabtree… RB LaDainian Tomlinson seems to have emerged as the Jets’ primary option in the backfield. Bad news for owners of Shonn Greene… The Ravens say RB Ray Rice will be a game time decision with a knee but it looks pretty certain that he’ll be in the lineup.

Fantasy Football Stud

Packers WR Donald Driver may be the biggest Lions fan in the NFC Central. He’s owned them to the tune of 37 catches, 500+ yards an three TD’s over the last five contests.

Fantasy Football Stiff

Bills rookie RB C.J. Spiller isn’t completely healthy and now must face the Jets run-stopping defense. It’ll be a long day on the shore of Lake Erie for the first round pick from Clemson.

Fantasy Football Sleeper

Maybe I’m just trying to will my RB’s into a productive state but Green Bay’s John Kuhn will be facing the NFL’s worst run defense when the Packers host the Lions.

Fantasy Football Slipper

Feeling a little guilty about tagging Cards’ RB Tim Hightower for this list, especially after he performed so well for me as a sleeper just two weeks ago. But, with Arizona’s commitment to Beanie Wells, Hightower’s touches will be limited.

by Eddie Mayrose

When last we left the McGee Survivor Fantasy Football League, in-laws Dr. Pete and Jenny Tyler-Moore had laid waste to three different families on their way to the title game, a contest won by the good doctor. Both were true survivors, having each hung on through some difficult weeks to avoid elimination. They’re back this year, with the rest of the clan, but, this time, with targets on their backs.

It’s a unique league, in that there are no head-to-head schedules. Rather, all 14 eams compete weekly against each other with the lowest scoring squad eliminated from competition. Bye weeks become critical, something the good Professor Wagstaff learned the hard way last year when he was summarily bounced in Week 11.

Fantasy Football Stars

Look for Tampa TE Kellen Winslow to show up his old squad as the Bucs visit Cleveland. The Patriots’ defense has been sub par for two years now, somethig Bengals’ QB Carson Palmer should easily exploit, especially with all of his new weapons.

Fantasy Football Stiffs

In Houston, RB Arian Foster may just be keeping the seat warm for Steve Slaton. Even if he isn’t, the Texans will have to throw te ball o beat the Colts, making Foster a risk not worth taking. Can’t see Jets WR Braylon Edwards christening his new stadium with a big game vs. the Ravens, especially with a struggling Mark Sanchez under center.

Fantasy Football Sleepers

Have to love the 49′ers DST against the undermanned Seahawks as Pete Carroll starts from scratch in Seattle. Dolphins QB Chad Henne should meet with little resistance as Miami opens the season with Buffalo.

Fantasy Football Slippers

While the Jets DST put up great numbers in leding the league, they were very ordinary at home last year. Joe Flacco, Ray Rice and their new cast of receivers should be enough to spoil Big Rexy’s 2010 debut. Don’t expect much from Eagles’ RB LeSean McCoy, especially against a Green Bay squad lookig toward a Super Bowl.

“Attention Fantasy Football Shoppers…”

By Eddie Mayrose

To most Fantasy Football Owners, the key to a successful season is a stable of capable ball-carriers. Given the amount of touches they receive, it’s a logical concept to spend early round picks on running backs. In most Fantasy Football Drafts, they dominate the first round; often taking up the first five slots. However, there is significant, year-to-year turnover on the list of elite backs, something owners don’t always take into account and the reason bargain hunting could lead to a championship.

Last season, many Fantasy Football Players were all smiles after landing Matt Forte and Marion Barber in the first two rounds. That was likely the only happiness enjoyed by those owners as both of the supposed studs failed to fire. Yet, discount rushers like Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles delivered top shelf numbers at a much lower price.

Heading into the season, there are two running backs that, because of the circumstances of their teams, are newcomers to the “Elite List”. There are two others, in similar situations, who are not as highly regarded but could become productive members of your championship squad at a fraction of the cost. Just remember to shoot the old Professor a thank you note as you celebrate your title.

Versatility

The darling of the 2010 Fantasy Football Season is Ray Rice, based on his running and receiving ability as well as the fact that he’s now the lead guy in Baltimore. He’s a Top 5 pick in most Fantasy Mock Drafts and is often the top selection in PPR (Points per Reception) leagues. However, the presence of Willis McGahee as the Ravens’ goal line back is a concern as it will limit Rice’s scoring opportunities.

Everything that has owners drooling over Rice is what was said about the aforementioned Forte last year. While the Bears’ youngster crushed the dreams of many, a closer look at his numbers reveals minimal drop-offs in receptions and yards-per-carry. The death knell came from his plummeting TD total, which fell from 12 to 4. However, with new Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz bringing his “Greatest Show On Turf” to Chicago, Forte is positioned for a nice bounce-back campaign; returning solid value for the fourth rounder he’ll cost you.

Quarterback Changes

“I love Rashard Mendenhall. With Roethlisberger suspended for at least the first four games of the season, Mendenhall will get a lot of carries.” How many times have you heard that this summer? While it’s true that the Steelers will be without Big Ben to begin the season, his backup, Byron Leftwich, is no Kellen Clemens. This is a QB that has led his team to the playoffs and is perfectly capable to step in and run the Pittsburgh offense as it is. Mendenhall will have a solid year but will not see the bump in statistics expected of him by those owners taking him in the first round.

In Arizona, however, Beanie Wells will absolutely benefit from a change as QB as well as his own move up the Cardinals’ depth chart. With Kurt Warner retired, Matt Leinart gets a second chance to establish himself as an NFL starter. You can bet he’ll rely heavily on Wells, who took a large part of last season to get his feet under him. His strong final month gave Fantasy owners every indication that he’s a star in search of opportunity, something he’s guaranteed in 2010 for the small price of as fourth or fifth round pick.
